Happy Birthday and Congratulations to Emily!

Jason’s oldest daughter has plenty going on this month. In early February, she was accepted into the Art Institute of Salt Lake City. In mid-February, she announced her wedding date for August 2010. And in late February, she will celebrate her 19th birthday. Needless to say, Jason has been on an emotional roller coaster this month, from pride (early-February) to fear (mid-February) to astonishment (late-February).

Congratulations Emily!

Intrinsic Engages a National Conversation

In November 2009, Intrinsic was retained by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to provide logistical coordination and facilitation for a public meeting with community members from the neighborhoods adjacent to "Refinery Row" in Corpus Christi, TX. The meeting was part of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCED) and ATSDR's joint project titled The National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical Exposures. Approximately 70 community members attended, and Susan effectively facilitated constructive dialogue between the public and ATSDR representatives. This event provided an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns about health risks and provide input into ATSDR's future efforts.

Dexter and Jason Conduct EPA Training Session

Dexter and Jason, along with Maureen King of the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona (ITCA), presented a training session at the recent EPA Community Involvement Training Conference in Seattle, WA. The title of the training session was, “Cultural Sensitivity Training: Opportunities to Connect with Native American Communities.” Dexter kicked off the training session with a presentation on working with tribes, including topics such as historic trauma, traditional peacemaking, cultural practices and appropriate protocols. Maureen’s presentation focused on her work as the Tribal Air Quality Program Manager for ITCA and specifically provided insights from her involvement with the Gila River Indian Community CARE Project. Jason’s presentation, titled “An Outsider on the Rez,” shared lessons learned from three case studies and offered bits of advice for other outsiders working in tribal communities.

Susan Enriches Dispute Resolution Skills

Susan recently attended the University of Texas Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolutions first annual Skills Enrichment Institute. Susan joined other practitioners, business professionals and academicians in the skill building program that allowed participants to choose among six two-day sessions. Susan chose “Creating Value through Negotiation”, taught by Melissa Manwaring, a Harvard faculty member. Drawing on decades of research at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, Susan learned how to better set the stage for productive negotiations before interaction begins, how to negotiate better outcomes and how to deal with expected and unexpected obstacles in the conflict resolution process. Susan particularly enjoyed the key note speaker – Susan Collin Marks – senior vice president of Search for Common Ground, and a South African who served a key role as peacemaker and peacebuilder during that country’s transition from apartheid to democracy. Susan was touched and inspired by a comment Ms. Marks used: “To make conflict is easy; to make peace is heroic.”

Twelve on the Twelfth

Happy Birthday to Dexter’s oldest daughter, Daniell. She turned 12 on June 12. To mark the occasion, she had a sleepover with a half-dozen of her closest friends, and her dad hosted a big family barbeque on Saturday. A big thanks to everyone who celebrated with Daniell!
